What are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are Google metrics for loading speed, responsiveness and layout stability. This article explains values, impact and practical use.

Core Web Vitals are three Google metrics that describe loading speed, responsiveness and visual stability of a website. They help assess whether a page is not only technically available, but also feels fast, stable and directly usable for visitors.

Which metrics are part of Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals currently consist of three metrics. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) evaluates how quickly the largest visible element in the first viewport appears. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures how quickly the page visibly responds after an interaction. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) shows whether elements move unexpectedly while the page loads.

Google evaluates these values based on real user data where enough field data is available. As a guideline, LCP should be no more than 2.5 seconds, INP no more than 200 milliseconds and CLS no more than 0.1. The decisive factor is not a single lab test, but the experience of a large share of actual visitors.

Why are Core Web Vitals relevant for SEO?

Core Web Vitals are part of the broader Page Experience concept. They do not replace content relevance, good information architecture or technical indexability. A slow or unstable page can still cause users to leave faster, complete forms less often or perceive content less clearly.

For search engine optimization, this means: good content also has to be usable. If SEO only focuses on keywords, technical bottlenecks that affect rankings and conversions at the same time can easily be missed. Google itself treats Core Web Vitals as quality and user experience signals, not as a stand-alone ranking lever.

How should the values be interpreted?

Core Web Vitals are not a design review and not a complete performance audit. They show concrete symptoms: the central content appears too late, the page reacts too slowly or the layout is unstable. From there, the underlying causes can be investigated in more detail.

It is important to distinguish between lab data and field data. Lab data is created under controlled conditions and helps with debugging. Field data comes from real user sessions and shows how the website performs in everyday use. When both perspectives point in the same direction, the diagnosis is more reliable.

When are Core Web Vitals especially important?

Core Web Vitals are especially relevant for commercial websites, shops, landing pages, portals and mobile entry points. There, a few seconds or a delayed reaction can decide whether a visitor stays, views a product or sends an inquiry.

Typical risk areas include large hero images, many tracking scripts, overloaded WordPress plugins, slow hosting, blocking JavaScript files and layouts without reserved space for images or embedded elements. In WordPress websites, problems often result from the interaction of theme, plugins, server, images and external services rather than from a single cause.

How can Core Web Vitals be improved?

Useful optimization starts with measurement. PageSpeed Insights, the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console, Lighthouse and real browser data all show different perspectives. Lab data helps with debugging, while field data shows the visitor reality.

In practice, performance optimization usually covers several layers: shortening server response times, delivering images in suitable formats and sizes, prioritizing critical CSS, reducing JavaScript, loading fonts in a controlled way and reserving stable layout areas. A fast LCP is not enough if the page then reacts slowly to clicks or buttons move while loading.

For businesses, it also matters which page types are affected. A poor value on a rarely visited archive page has a different priority than problems on the homepage, service pages, checkout or contact form. Good optimization connects technical metrics with business goals.

Seasonal campaigns and relaunches should be considered as well. If a new landing page suddenly receives paid traffic, poor Core Web Vitals can directly weaken campaign performance.
